Douglas Pierre Baulos’s work simultaneously explores the ideas linking the outside world with inner experience, creating objects that merge his interests in the dictionary, photography, and ceramics to create collages and installations that present themselves as humble objects that open into vast, imaginative spaces for the viewer. Baulos works with the feelings of loss, mortality, and the delicate nature of memory, beginning with fragmented images, ideas, and materials. The act of layering dissimilar elements triggers associations in complex combinations and personifies intangible experiences and emotions for the audience.

There is an intimacy with the subject becoming object. Retired photographs, found images, and ephemera are redeployed as agents of memory that can evoke and reflect on personal histories – worn and battered, certain found objects evoke sympathy and empathy and connect ideas to memory.

Doug Baulos received his MFA from the University of New Orleans and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is an assistant professor of drawing and bookmaking at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and regularly teaches workshops and lectures on his research in book arts, drawing, and mixed media. In 2009, Baulos won the President’s Award for Excellence In Teaching at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
